GEMINI in Bulgaria: Serial Drama as a Tool for Social Change

Since the beginning of 2025, the Center for Educational Initiatives (CEI) has been actively piloting the GEMINI project in Bulgarian schools, focusing on the use of serial drama as an educational tool. The pilot activities are being conducted with students from 51st Secondary School "Elisaveta Bagryana" in Sofia and Simeon Radev High School for Foreign Language Studies in Pernik. Following a meeting in early March with a team of teachers from 18th Secondary School "William Gladstone" in Sofia, we are hopeful that they will also rejoin the pilot phase.
Project Adaptation in Bulgaria
Following the legislative changes in the summer of 2024, some topics related to gender identity became socially sensitive and unsuitable for discussion in the classroom. In response, CEI adapted the project’s approach by shifting the focus to:
Social activism – exploring how young people can be agents of change by challenging stereotypes and societal expectations.
Social roles and stereotypes – analyzing differences in expectations for "male" and "female" professions, social roles, and leadership.
Leadership and power – examining how power is represented in TV series and how different genders exercise it.
Methods of Implementation
To ensure student engagement, the CEI team utilized interactive methods, including:
Group discussions and debates on social and cultural topics.
Creative workshops – students developed their own script ideas following the GEMINI guidelines.
Analysis of TV show scenes – discussions on the portrayal of gender roles and stereotypes in popular culture.
Scriptwriting competition – students will create and present their own TV series proposals, which will be evaluated as part of the project.
What’s Next?
By the end of March, students will finalize their script ideas, after which an evaluation will be conducted to assess the effectiveness of serial drama as a tool for developing critical thinking, creative writing, and teamwork skills.
